Inside Tip: Echternach

Hello my beloved readership,

Echternach is an inside tip at the border between Germany and Luxemburg. Read an introduction about the split town here in the following.

The Lake(side)

The lake of Echternach is a spot that attracts many people as number one destination of that town. With a restaurant right at the starting point you can either strengthen yourself before your walk or reward yourself afterwards. Sometimes the sight on the lake gets disturbed by trees approximately halfway there is a little hut to rest built right above the lake. If you decide to take a pram with you beware of some stairs at the hut. Since the lake however is a popular destination you might find help carrying the pram anyway. In a casual manner the walk along the lake would last about one hour.

Basilica St. Willibrord Abbey of Echternach

The basilica St. Willibrord Abbey of Echternach is not only a huge church but probably the most famous sight you will find there. With a parking lot on the plot of the church you can get there very comfortably from the lakeside and enjoy the building from 360 degrees. In my opinion it is a must-see even if you are not a fan of churches. An addition on top: a beautiful flower garden right at the front of the church. Once you have reached the church and the parking lot you can stay there during your whole trip to Echternach.

Echternach: Town Center

The town center is not far off from the abbey of Echternach so that you can basically leave your car at the parking yard of the Basilica and walk on. In general I would say that the town center of Echternach is not necessarily spectacular and just like other centers of small towns. However in my opinion every townhall deserves its appreciation. In one of the cafés you can have delicious cups of ice-cream on hot summer days. Otherwise something else that has left a positive impression was the little supermarkets to quickly get water (and COVID-required masks) from. On top we had been lucky however that on the day we visited Echternach there had been stalls at the townhall square and a Mickey Mouse walking through the shopping street so that we could get some extra impressions.

Echternach: Tiny But Fine

If you live near the border of Luxembourg it would not just be the thing to go and see the capital – see an article about it here – or buy coffee, drinks and charge petrol for cheaper prizes in Wasserbillig (which would be translated in German as “cheap water”) but also go and have some tiny adventures at hidden treasures such as Echternach. You can enjoy nature, be close to animals and charge a lot of positive energy and inspiration – even though we have had some additional highlights. Latest if you have children you will see that you do not need a big show in order to experience something, therefore I gladly recommend Echternach as inside tip.

Love, Johanna
