The Town With The Castle: Cochem

Cochem at the Mosel-river is a popular destination in the region. Get impressions of the town with the castle along with a sight inside out here.

From north Germany to the west – the Mosel-region is place worth visiting and popular to visit – one of the first articles I had written about when I moved into this domain was reasons to travel to the Mosel-river region, read it again here. Another reason I would like to add – five years later – is Cochem and all that it includes. Cochem is a town located at almost the very north of the Mosel, the river with the ribbons. As you take the regional train or car from Koblenz to Trier it is the first stop along the ribbons. The town contains small streets, old buildings that are colorful on top, it is built along another vineyard going from down to up, you can see the ribbon-shaped Mosel-river from there very closely and above all it contains a castle. This town promises to be quite an adventure for everyone who is willing to take it.

Castle Cochem

Like in a fairy take – with a corresponding view – the castle of Cochem finds itself on the very top of the town, which is nearly inviting you to wend your way there. Now that I think of it it somehow reminds me of the Grimaldi Palace in Monaco where you also wend your way up a mountain so high and so steep on the way back that you would have broken your legs when returning on high heels, which I had on on that trip and therefore went back barefoot, thank God it was summer. Also this time we almost had a little accident on our way down back when our back then two-year-old son almost fell over in his travelling-pram.

Anyway, the castle of Cochem offers study trips every half an hour which lasts approximately 45 minutes. The trip includes the possibility to see the castle from side and get stories told about it, the town as well as important items and places inside the castle. Just like in a museum, of course you are not allowed to touch anything but free to take as many photos as you wish. Our guide was even kind enough to take a family photo of us on the balcony with a view. The guide had also given us enough time to look around each separate room entirely with as much time as needed. At the end of your trip there is a souvenir-shop integrated in the plot of the castle outside the restricted entrance.

As we had visited the castle in times of Covid and mask-duty we had to wear masks during the study trip.

Cochem: a Stop to be along the Mosel

Apart from Trier as biggest town as well as former Roman capital and Bitburg (if you are a beer-enthusiast) Cochem definitely is the first stop in means of popularity and chronology (coming from the north) to go and check out among the places along the Mosel-river. The myth of its unique beauty, that appeals people all around Germany, and fascinates people outside Germany as they get in touch with the sights, is not only a legend but true. Not only its beauty is bearing German architectural uniqueness, good wine and healthy nature but also contains indescribable German history. You are going to learn more about these statements in particular in my upcoming article about Traben-Trabach. Stay tuned.

See more: As sadly not all the photos match in this article I will share more on my Instagram-account. Follow me under @JohannaKarajan to stay tuned and see more.

Did you know? The outfit I had worn for this trip is trendy cut summer dress. Click here to see it again.

Love, Johanna
