Hidden Treasure: Luneburg

Hello my beautiful people,

Luneburg is a hidden treasure nearby Hamburg if you think you have already seen everything in the Hanseatic city. See an introduction in the following.

In both directions, if you live close to a metropolis you are connected with it because you would work there, you study there or there is a special event taking place. Likewise the other way round, if you live in a metropolis you know about the small hidden treasures around… at least you should. One of these treasures is Luneburg in the southern suburbs ob Hamburg – even though officially it belongs to lower Saxony. Get some impressions below:

1. Orientation: The Church

Imagine you arrive at a completely foreign place and do not know where to go. Of course, you could take out your phone and use Google (Maps) or use the very classic way to ask people passing by. But the real adventurers among us who have furthermore played Resident Evil 4 know that the destination or rather the center is always the church with the prominently big and high tower. This is how the St. John’s Church (GER.: St. Johannis Kirche) has become a core point of orientation which you could start your adventure in Luneburg from.

2. Wedding-Spot: The Water Tower

Did you know that Luneburg is a popular place to get married in? Another benefit of the romantic small suburbs towards big metropolises. The second prominent spot to not get lost is the Water Tower of Luneburg where you have the chance to catch the one or other wedding when passing by. On top there is a parking lot included in case you visit Luneburg by car and need a place to leave it because, trust me, Luneburg is a hidden treasure to discover by foot.

3. City Center with Architecture

The city center of Luneburg is a spectacle! Not only is it small enough to almost completely restrict cars between the houses for a carefree shopping-trip but furthermore the shops you know are hiding in the pretty, historic Hanseatic architecture that might give you a feeling of Nordic or Benelux-countries. My personal highlight are the flowers that lend even more romanticism and beauty to the beauties made of redbrick.
Inside tip: when you arrive at the noon on Saturdays you will be lucky to find a weekly market at the townhall square. Another romantic activity I enjoy to do with my husband (especially on a sunny day).

4. Into the Nature: Lakeside

You have seen all sights, you have been shopping, you have eaten very well and what more could top that than a chilled walk around the lake before driving back home? Activeness, exactly! A top highlight to end your Luneburg trip with is doubtlessly the lake nearby the city center, the Kreidebergsee. Just like the lake in Echternach, which I wrote about here, it is a good place to relax, to walk and find peace in the nature nearby the water. Definitely a treasure within all treasures.

Luneburg: Hidden Treasures in a Hidden Treasure

Luneburg is a popular place among those who actually know it. Furthermore it belongs to the must-show sights of natives who expect guests in Hamburg. But this is no surprise as Luneburg is a place you immediately fall in love with at the first sight and a place everyone is going to talk about. It combines Hanseatic romanticism with nature and the calmness of small cities. An unexpected hidden treasure.
Inside tip: If you visit Luneburg during Christmas time (end of November until Christmas) you will be able to visit North Germany’s most magical Christmas market.

Did you know? Luneburg is not only a popular place to make a daytrip and show to tourists but also a popular place with a renowned university, the Leuphana, to study in Northern Germany.

Love, Johanna
