Visit Wismar

Hello my dear readers,

if you are planning a day-trip to celebrate your birthday outside the city and live in Hamburg then the Hanseatic league of Wismar might be a destination for you.

My sister-in-law is a real expert and cosmopolitan especially when it comes to hidden treasures. This was how she planned to spend my brother’s birthday with a weekend in Wismar. So in order to get a good gift for him we did research and found the Wismar-voucher (more about it in the last paragraph). But typically for my brother he did not find a way to use that voucher, so he returned that gift (no worries, as you know me I already had another birthday-gift ready to set) telling me that perhaps we would once make a day-trip to Wismar with the children and be able to use it. So ironically we decided to spend my birthday in Wismar with a trip for one day.

Worth Seeing: The Architecture & Churches

You do not actually think of much when you think. It is a Hanseatic city and that should be already be the most worthy thing to know about the city. As we usually do we do not do any research about the place we visit. Either we are guided by natives or people who have already been there or we get to find out once we are there. After all this is what the adventure is all about – and yes that includes the risk to miss some important sights but therefore we are looking for souvenirs and postcards to give us necessary hints. Talking about hints we did the only right thing to follow the most important lecture of the Resident Evil games: The church is the destination – and in Wismar you have three of them basically close by or in one direction to follow a path. Some other good spots to follow are the central station and the harbor. Like this you know that you cannot miss anything. We did in fact freeze a lot on this first day of September even if it was sunny but still we insisted to go and reach all three churches and were proud, happy and relieved to have made it and meanwhile we discovered the beautiful architecture.

Wismar Harbour

If you are visiting a Hanseatic league (in total there are 25 of them on the whole whereas the most famous ones in Germany are three Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck) something you must see in any case is its harbor. Even though Hanseatic leagues are defined by their merchant guilds and market town they are in the first place commonly associated by their harbor. Wismar is in fact one of those additional cities that joined the Hanseatic league afterwards but still contains a harbor. Sadly because of all the great cafés you had a plague of annoying and monstrous wasps still at the meteorological beginning of autumn. Still it was a good way to spend your time in Wismar with a harbor boat-trip which lasts approximately one hour.

Hint: Wismar-Voucher

“The perfect gift! The city-voucher WISMAR”, so the official website of Wismar-city entitles it. Imagine you visit a city and have voucher which you can use for entertainment and cultural undertakings up to things for your daily use. For what concerned us the perfect use of the big party of this voucher was to have a rich brunch in a café that was close to the city center. However we still had some value left in that voucher and did not actually know what to do with it as we were uncertain when or whether we would return (not that we would not have liked Wismar but there were still many other places to discover). So we made like three rounds through the main street (because the eclairs we wanted to get from that one bakery had been sold out already) and ended up getting a warm cuddly scarf from ESPRIT for me as it was really cold and the jacket I had was not enough for that transparency-look with the coarse-knit here. “All the shops in Wismar should join the voucher-system”, I heard the staff talking. Well, at least they did I was thinking to myself. Like this I had a memorable souvenir that would always remind me of that trip and birthday I had.

If you are interested in getting the voucher or need more information check it out here. What I loved most about this voucher is that you can individually design it.

Love, Johanna
