Hello my dear readership,
Chemnitz, formerly Karl-Marx-Stadt, was declared the Eurpean Capital of Culture 2025. Read here everything you have got to know about it why it is worth visiting.
Karl-Marx-City
Saxonia or Eastern Germany in general is known to be politically left oriented. Therefore Chemnitz had been named differently in times of the GDR. Enforced by the fathers of today’s left (labor) party (SED/Die LINKE) Chemnitz was named Karl-Marx-Stadt (Carl-Marx-City) from 1953 until 1990. Karl(Carl) Marx (1818-1883) who was born in Trier was a German philosopher, economist, society theorist, political journalist and historian who was the protagonist of the labor movement. Chemnitz was named after the river that is flowing through the city. In old Sorbian language the expression Chemnitz has its origin from the word “Kamenz” which means stone-stream. Chemnitz is as well known as “city of modernness” because it is a famous and popular location for technology, innovation and a successful industrial production.

Cultural Metropolis
A city worth being declared the European Capital of Culture of a certain year of course needs to have an attractive meeting-point for cultural events such as music or other expressions of art. As my best friend who guided us through her city told me there have been numerous concerts she had been to in the Stadthalle (city hall) of Chemnitz which is also the Culture and Congress-Center of the city. My personal impression would be that you can compare it to the Alexela Kontserdimaja of Tallinn and look at this view. Who would not like to gather at such a beautiful place for a cultural event. Visit the official site here.

Famous Technical University
In my article about Dresden, which you can check out once again here, I pointed out to you that universities or academies also gain the significance of sights worth seeing. Chemnitz itself is famous for its Technical University (TU Chemnitz). But also without it Chemnitz is a popular city to study in for people who live in the countryside of the Erzgebirge and do not want to move far off (and work in afterwards as big city nearby). As universities always lay outside the city center because of big campuses we missed to see it or pass by but the TU Chemnitz definitely is a recommendable destination for you. If you visit Chemnitz and need something to see.
Worth-Seeing Buildings
May it be the town hall (below), churches, the shopping center “Galerie Roter Turm” (Engl.: Galeria Red Tower) or other buildings worthy to be taken a photo of – Chemnitz is not only a clean city but foremost a beautiful city with impressive buildings and constructions big and small you will find pleasure and value in. Often advisors or official sources lead you to the most obvious. What I like about discovering things on my own is that I can show you things around the corner as hidden treasure which kids could also find fun in such as the construction of seals that children could enjoy to take a ride on.

Visit #Chemnitz 2025
Chemnitz was chosen as the European Capital of Culture 2025. In summer of that year there is going to await you lots of different kinds of entertainment such as concerts, street festivals and more. Find out more information on the official site here. If not other things then maybe this could definitely be a reason for you to pay Chemnitz a visit. Even if you could not make it to the dates when the entertainment would be taking place it will be worth visiting the whole year as the decoration remains.
Fot what concerns me I can just add another huge thanks to our dear friends for taking us to Chemnitz and showing us around. Our little holiday at year please could not have been more terrific!
On my Instagram-feed I am soon going to share more impressions of our trip to Chemnitz. Make sure to follow me under @johannakarajan.

[…] Since 1985 the European Union entitles cities all around Europe the continent’s Capital of Culture annually. The idea was initialized by the back then Greek minister of culture Melina Mercouri and supports the idea of Creative Europe, which you can read about here. Generally cities can apply for this title with a culture program. Independent experts then pick the city to be entitled. The first European Capital of Culture has been Athens. You can read more about Tartu’s cultural program in my article about the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 here. As a big travel and culture enthusiast I love the idea of “chasing” this title and travel to as many capitals of culture as I can. So it looks like I would pay another visit to Chemnitz, which you have read about here. […]
